It was another great week in the jungle- Sept. 23-27

I apologize for this post coming so late, I’ve been fighting a rough cold! Please try your best to keep everyone healthy! Sick season is already upon us 🙁

Here is a look at what your Kindergartener has been learning:

  • Color Word:  Green
  • Popcorn Words:  Our popcorn words last week were: the and dog.
  • Readers Workshop:  During readers workshop this week we learned how to choose books that are a good fit for us.  One way to find a good fit book is by looking at the cover of a book.  We can also find a good fit book by looking inside a book.  We took some time to read books in three ways too!!!  Your kindergartener practiced reading a book by reading the pictures, reading by telling a story they already knew, and by working to read the words.  Each student has a book box that they are storing their “good fit” books in.  Among those books are two books that have popcorn words in them.  We have been practicing reading these books by reading the words!!  They are doing an amazing job!!
  • Writers Workshop:  This week we continued to work on sharing stories that we know and retelling stories that we listened to.  We shared stories with a partner and even told our story about our Walk-a-thon!  We did great!
  • Math:  In Math we continued working on comparing numbers.  We made “towers” with numbers to see which number was taller/bigger and which one was shorter/smaller.  We have even started writing number sentences.  For example, 4=3+1 or 3+1=4.  Thanks for working with your child on their first math homework of the year! Every Wednesday a new math homework will come home. The children have one week to complete it, but can return it back to school as soon as it’s completed.
  • Handwriting:  During handwriting we practiced writing the numbers 6 and 7.  We even learned a fun way to tell between the letters b and d.  When we talked about writing a b we learned that the line of the b is like a bat and the round part is like the ball.  So when we write a b we can remind ourselves that the bat hits the ball.  For the letter d we learned that the round part is like a doughnut and the line part is when the doughnut rolls out the door.  Pretty neat trick to help us remember those tricky b and d’s!!
  • Walk-a-thon…WOW!!!  We had a beautiful day to walk together!  Our friends were so excited to see one another and share in this fun filled day.  We even spotted some big brothers, sisters and parents!!  Great to see the kids enjoying themselves!!  This even made for a great even to share during writers workshop to tell a story together!
  • IMG_1969IMG_1950 IMG_1949 IMG_1952
  • 5th Grade Bus and Reading Buddies: We got together with our buddies from Mr. Gort’s room Friday afternoon. We had so much fun interviewing our buddies and listening to them read to us! We will try to get together every other Friday this year to enjoy each others company!

IMG_1999 IMG_1990 IMG_1998 IMG_1997 IMG_1996

  • Mystery Reader: We enjoyed Mrs. Helmholdt, Jack’s Mom on Friday as our mystery reader! Thank you so much for surprising us! I will chose an interested parent. grand parent, etc. to come every Friday afternoon to surprise us!
  • IMG_2001
  • Happy Birthday Jack!!! We celebrated Jack’s 6th Birthday on Friday! The students had a blast receiving goodie bags from Jack! Your child can bring a special non-edible treat to pass out to the class on their special day.

  • Don’t forget...to turn in your permission slips for our upcoming orchard field trip.  Chaperones are free of charge, but must provide their own transportation to the orchard. Carpools are encouraged. Directions to the orchard will be given to you that morning. Can’t wait!
  • Wednesday is library day! We went for the first time Wednesday. Please help your child remember to return their book by Wednesday so they can check out a new one!
  • School Policy:  No Heelys (wheeled shoes) or Beyblades are to be brought to school.  This is a school policy for student safety.  Thank you.
  • Upcoming Events:  Wednesday, Oct. 2…Fire Safety day , Friday, Oct. 4…Popcorn Friday (provided by our PTC).

Hope everyone has a great week and stays healthy!

~Ms. Yankee

Here are some highlights of our week:

Our First Mystery Readers: Mrs. Stutz’s Kindergarten class! We had so much fun sharing the book, Press Here by Herve Tullet with their class!  I will be contacting those of you that showed interest on the parent survey of being our mystery reader this month or next. I am trying to get a mystery reader each week on a Friday afternoon to come read and surprise our class. If you have an open Friday afternoon in the next few months feel free to e-mail me! The children love to have their special parents, grandparents, aunt, or uncles surprise us!

  • Our color word of the week was YELLOW.  We practiced singing our Y-E-L-L-O-W song and coloring our yellow pictures.  Your kindergartner brought home a new color word book.  Be sure to keep these in a special place and let them read their book to you for extra practice.
  • More popcorn words popped into our classroom: I, see, a.  We made a I see book and have been practicing reading our book with partners and by ourselves during our reader’s workshop time everyday.
  • Writing:  We have been working on sharing stories that have happened to us.  Also, retelling stories that we hear.  All of us shared our treasures we brought in and shared why it’s special to us.  Your kindergartner has started to “sketch” their stories this week.  They did a GREAT job!  I am collecting these sketches in their writing folders….can’t wait for you to see them when we finish this unit!

  • Reading:  We have been practicing books we know.  We have a book in our own book boxes now called I See.  This book was read as a class and now we keep it in our book boxes to read to ourselves.  We also have learned how to read with a reading partner.
  • Math:  In Math we are continuing to work on understanding numbers 1-10.  This week we drew a scene of 4 and our first homework page went home with the task of drawing a scene of 5.  This is due back next week, Wednesday.  We even talked about what adding and subtracting are! Then on Friday we reinforced these concepts with some fun math games!!! We had a blast learning together with our partners!

  • IN NEED: Do you know anyone or are you yourself a skilled sewer??! I am looking for someone to make a few weighted snakes for our classroom. These snakes are used as a sensory tool to help some of the students in my class learn better! I am looking for the following: 6- 6″ x 4″ pieces of heavy fabric,  36 cups of rice, and most importantly a sewer!!! I have the detailed step-by-step instructions to create these snakes. I am looking to have 3 made. They don’t seem very complicated so please let me know if you can help with sewing skills and/or donations for the supplies!!! E-mail if your interested in helping!
  • DONATIONS: Play dough (assorted colors) and Expo Dry Erase markers (assorted colors) are needed in our classroom! If you can donate either of these please e-mail me! They would be greatly appreciated and used to help our learning!

Georgetown Elementary will be holding our primary fundraiser on Thursday, September 26.  Your child came home last week with information on this event.  Our class will be walking together on this day during a designated time.  Our goal as always is to have fun and try to raise money for our wonderful school.  Donation forms are in the packet that was sent home today.  Please check out the details and be sure to ask if you have any questions!

We had a good week, we had a great week, so pat yourselves on the back…

Theme of the Week: Brown Bear– This book has a great rhythm and beat, the illustrations are fun and predictable, our color popcorn sight words are throughout the text, as well as many other popcorn words learned thus far, such as “I,” “a,” “see.” and “dog.”  On Friday we created our own special book that will join our classroom library and our own book retell bracelet. They were super excited to read their bracelets to you!We also had our first BIG GROUP on Friday with Mrs. Iwema’s class, we taught her class the “Cool Bear Hunt” song and dance and shared some gummy bear treats together. I was the mystery reader for their room, we had a super fun afternoon meeting one another! Hoping for more BIG GROUP times to come!

Popcorn Words this week: “green”, “the” and “dog”

Next weeks words: “blue”, “is”, “this” , and “his”

Special Event: Walk-a-Thon- Thanks for all your wonderful donations to our school! This event was a HUGE success, and what a beautiful morning to walk! We even got to practice our soccer kicks, shoot some hoops and jump through hoops as we made our way around the track! We had so much fun!

Math: The children have been learning and reinforcing their knowledge of groups and sets of numbers, graphing (more, fewer, longer, shorter), as well as differentiating shapes that are circles and not circles (squares, rectangles, etc.).  Homework was sent home this week with your child.  They were VERY excited to bring this home and get started.  Thank you for your help with administering this homework and encouraging them on this new task and experience.  The children are looking forward to receiving their homework once a week on Thursdays.

Our number writing practice and poems for this week were:  6= “A stick and a hoop do the tricks, that’s the way to make a six.”  7=”Across the sky and down from heaven, that’s the way to make a seven.”

In our Writing Workshop this week, we read the book “What a Treasure!” by Jane and Will Hillenbrand, and discussed how a treasure is more than just money or a treasure chest of gold.  A treasure is different to everyone, and usually it touches our hearts, like our families and friends.  Thank you for assisting your child this week in selecting a treasure for their treasure bags to share with our class.  I loved hearing and learning about all the many things that are so dear and important to our class. These items helped to be a springboard for our writing this week on our special writer’s workshop paper.  We learned about the parts of the paper and what and where to include each.  The children did a FANTASTIC job for their first time!  We will continue to practice this skill of writing and most of all brainstorming our ideas for topics to write about.

Our first class visit to our school library occurred this past Tuesday.  We had the opportunity to meet Mrs. VandenBerg, our librarian, have her read a story, and check out our first book! The children did a great job with their first library check out and are very proud for the opportunity to independently check out a book each Tuesday. Thank you for reading with your child and enjoy this special time together.

The Explorers for next week will be: Madeline, Dylan, Kendra, Faith, and Nathan!

A Great Week in the Jungle…

On Monday the children learned what Constitution Day by connecting it our classroom created promises/rules and had a discussion about how the United States have a set of rules too. We recited the Pledge of Allegiance and our class pledge, leaned about some famous American landmarks and people (George Washington, Ben Franklin, the White House, the American Flag, etc) and created American Flag hats! It was dun to celebrate our country!

During Math time we have been reading Anno’s Counting Book which helped us learn number relationships by counting groups of objects.  The children have applied this concept by drawing their own scenes to show groups of 2-5.  I hope that you have asked your child to explain their scene drawings to you as they arrive home.  We also used our math trays, mini square tiles and number tiles to build concepts of numbers 1-5 and to begin to add and subtract totals of 2 and 3. The children are reciting number poems to help them learn the proper formation of writing their numbers.  We are having fun saying these poems while we use mini chalkboards, mini whiteboards and create rainbow writings of our numbers.  So far we have learned poems for the numbers 0-5.  This week we will learn the poems for numbers 6 & 7.  Please ask your child to recite these number poems for you as they practice writing their numbers at home.

We have begun our Writer’s Workshop by having the children tell stories about themselves and things that they know and can do.  The children are learning to use their storytelling voice (loud enough for the listener to hear) and to look at their audience. They are also learning to listen when others are telling stories.  At home, you can support your child’s oral storytelling by telling stories yourself about things you know and can do (everyday events your child can relate to) and by asking your child to tell you the story they told at school.  Help your child remember stories by practicing telling stories at home and encourage them to tell these stories at school.  Have fun telling stories!

In our Reading Workshop time we explored concept books, books with things we know and can read, abc’s, numbers, shapes, colors, store and restaurant signs, food labels, etc. We also worked on looking at a books cover to learn what a book might be about. We continued to read and love our books!

We also had fun this week learning the Gummy Bear song, Who Stole the Cookies? and continued enjoyment singing the Cool Bear Hunt!
