We had a GREAT week! October 14-18….

We experienced a FUN FILLED FRIDAY! We had  senses fun centers, a writing celebration, a mystery reader and most exciting: PJ DAY for filling our rockstar jar with rocks for awesome behavior! I am so proud of each of them!!! It was well deserved! We are all working harder to make sure we help one another as a classroom team! It was especially comfy , cozy to be in our pj’s for quiet time! 🙂

Science: BIG thanks go out to Mrs. Helmholdt, Mrs. Hoag, and Mrs. Dykstra for their wonderful help in leading a sense center!!! It wouldn’t have been possible without you! We got to explore our sense of sight with a float/sink experiment! We put different fall items in a pail of water to test whether they float or sink!! The most exciting find? A pumpkin floats!!! We also put our sense of smell to the test as we took turns smelling hidden scents and deciding whether this was a pleasant or unpleasant smell to us! When it came to our sense of taste we took a taste of something sour, salty, bitter, and sweet! It was fun to hear their comments and see their faces! 🙂 Finally, we explored our sense of touch by feeling what was inside our hidden touch bags. We used adjectives to describe what we were feeling as we tried to sketch and label our drawings. We even got to learn a little about braille as we explored some books in braille! We’re loving science! We will continue to explore our senses next week!

Mystery Reader: We had our fourth mystery reader, Mrs. Jones, Landon’s mom! She was a BIG surprise to Landon. She read The Giant Jam Sandwich , a fun book with rhyming that drew us all in! Thank you!!! I will continue to line of mystery readers on Friday’s in late November/December soon. If you have a Friday that works, please don’t hesitate to e-mail me! We would also love some DAD readers! 🙂

Writing Workshop: Your kindergartener has been working so hard on their writing. We have learned that writers first think of a story, then picture their story in their mind, next they sketch/draw their story, say their story and then write their story.  The kindergarteners have worked so hard that we ended the week with picking our “best” writing so far.  We “fixed and fancied” our “best” piece by adding color, more labels and words to it.  We celebrated our “best” writing with Mrs. Stutz’s class.  The kindergarteners shared their writing with a partner from Mrs. Stutz’s class.  We then got to celebrate our writing pieces with a yummy punch juice cheers together.  We can’t wait to celebrate more writing pieces throughout the year.

Play Time: We look forward to our play to learn time! It’s a time to get creative, be imaginative, take-turns, communicate, and just have fun! This week I got out the dress-up box!! Huge hit and lots of laughs! Many of these photos were requested and followed by, “Can you please post on the blog and e-mail to my mom!?” 🙂

Explorer of the Jungle:  We started our second time this week of being the explorer of the dayWe will each get a turn to take home Banana’s , our traveling class monkey. Banana’s comes with a writing journal where your child is asked to complete a page of what they did together. Encourage them to draw a detailed picture with labels and try a sentence! We have had fun this week hearing what Banana’s did at his sleepover at Owen’s, Jack’s, and Sydney’s house! We will pick a stick with your child’s name at random each day to decide who takes Banana’s next! So exciting!

Color Word of the week:  Black.  We made our black color book and learned our black song.

Popcorn Words:  me, yes and no. These words have popped up everywhere.  The kindergarteners practice these words by spotting them in our morning message and finding them in our popcorn word books!  Any extra practice at home with our flashcards will help your kindergartener spot these words even quicker.

Math:  We have finished our first unit in Math and are just beginning Unit 2.  We will continue to identify numbers and shapes.  Also, we will start to learn about a 5 group.  No math homework was given this week. It will come home again this Wednesday.

Handwriting:  We have continued to work on learning the rest of our jump frog letters.  Your kindergartener practiced how to write uppercase B, R, N, and M.

Reader’s Workshop:  This week we learned about making connections to what we are reading by saying, “That has happened to me!” and then sharing our story. We practiced sharing connections when we read with our reading buddies. We are building our reading stamina and our now up to 5 minutes!!! Way to go readers!!! We also worked on retelling a story, by using a flow map, to sequence the story into first, next and last.  We read Goldilocks and the Three Bears together and then learned how to use a “flow map” to retell our story. Please work with your child at home on a retell after your done reading together! We will continue to work on this during our workshop time.

It was another great week in the jungle- Sept. 23-27

I apologize for this post coming so late, I’ve been fighting a rough cold! Please try your best to keep everyone healthy! Sick season is already upon us 🙁

Here is a look at what your Kindergartener has been learning:

  • Color Word:  Green
  • Popcorn Words:  Our popcorn words last week were: the and dog.
  • Readers Workshop:  During readers workshop this week we learned how to choose books that are a good fit for us.  One way to find a good fit book is by looking at the cover of a book.  We can also find a good fit book by looking inside a book.  We took some time to read books in three ways too!!!  Your kindergartener practiced reading a book by reading the pictures, reading by telling a story they already knew, and by working to read the words.  Each student has a book box that they are storing their “good fit” books in.  Among those books are two books that have popcorn words in them.  We have been practicing reading these books by reading the words!!  They are doing an amazing job!!
  • Writers Workshop:  This week we continued to work on sharing stories that we know and retelling stories that we listened to.  We shared stories with a partner and even told our story about our Walk-a-thon!  We did great!
  • Math:  In Math we continued working on comparing numbers.  We made “towers” with numbers to see which number was taller/bigger and which one was shorter/smaller.  We have even started writing number sentences.  For example, 4=3+1 or 3+1=4.  Thanks for working with your child on their first math homework of the year! Every Wednesday a new math homework will come home. The children have one week to complete it, but can return it back to school as soon as it’s completed.
  • Handwriting:  During handwriting we practiced writing the numbers 6 and 7.  We even learned a fun way to tell between the letters b and d.  When we talked about writing a b we learned that the line of the b is like a bat and the round part is like the ball.  So when we write a b we can remind ourselves that the bat hits the ball.  For the letter d we learned that the round part is like a doughnut and the line part is when the doughnut rolls out the door.  Pretty neat trick to help us remember those tricky b and d’s!!
  • Walk-a-thon…WOW!!!  We had a beautiful day to walk together!  Our friends were so excited to see one another and share in this fun filled day.  We even spotted some big brothers, sisters and parents!!  Great to see the kids enjoying themselves!!  This even made for a great even to share during writers workshop to tell a story together!
  • IMG_1969IMG_1950 IMG_1949 IMG_1952
  • 5th Grade Bus and Reading Buddies: We got together with our buddies from Mr. Gort’s room Friday afternoon. We had so much fun interviewing our buddies and listening to them read to us! We will try to get together every other Friday this year to enjoy each others company!

IMG_1999 IMG_1990 IMG_1998 IMG_1997 IMG_1996

  • Mystery Reader: We enjoyed Mrs. Helmholdt, Jack’s Mom on Friday as our mystery reader! Thank you so much for surprising us! I will chose an interested parent. grand parent, etc. to come every Friday afternoon to surprise us!
  • IMG_2001
  • Happy Birthday Jack!!! We celebrated Jack’s 6th Birthday on Friday! The students had a blast receiving goodie bags from Jack! Your child can bring a special non-edible treat to pass out to the class on their special day.
  • IMG_1980
  • Don’t forget...to turn in your permission slips for our upcoming orchard field trip.  Chaperones are free of charge, but must provide their own transportation to the orchard. Carpools are encouraged. Directions to the orchard will be given to you that morning. Can’t wait!
  • Wednesday is library day! We went for the first time Wednesday. Please help your child remember to return their book by Wednesday so they can check out a new one!
  • School Policy:  No Heelys (wheeled shoes) or Beyblades are to be brought to school.  This is a school policy for student safety.  Thank you.
  • Upcoming Events:  Wednesday, Oct. 2…Fire Safety day , Friday, Oct. 4…Popcorn Friday (provided by our PTC).

Hope everyone has a great week and stays healthy!

Save your books!

Yesterday, the students came home with the first of many color books and poems they created! The students should be able to sing you the Red Song and read the Red Book to you using their reading finger! They’re becoming readers already! Please continue to practice these at home. A fun idea might be to decorate a special shoe box together for saving these books and poems they can read in! They will be able to start a mini collection of books! Later in the year our popcorn word books will make their way home too!

They should all know how to read and spell RED this week!!! We had had fun learning together!!!

Jungle News Week of Oct. 29-Nov.1

Special Happenings this week:

Halloween Party- What a fun way to end the month of October! We had some great costumes and some awesome planners and helpers! Thanks again!

Rang Guang Visit- Wow! We were so excited to meet the students visiting from our sister school in Taiwan this week! The school wide assembly was so fun and we got to see a special puppet and yo yo show from these students!

New Brain Break- Tooty Ta dance 🙂 Ask us for a demonstration, we sure had a lot of laughs!

Handwriting: We continued with two more Starting Capital letters, V and W this week! Keep practicing and reviewing these letters at home!

Writing Workshop: We connected learning of our upcoming presidential election into our writing workshop time. It was a HUGE hit! We read My Teacher for President and Duck for President. After we read Duck for President we filled out our voter registration cards and we voted which way we like to eat corn….corn on the cob, popcorn or caramel corn? We took turns going to the private voting booth and selecting our choice in secrecy. Then we created voting signs to convince our friends  why that way to eat corn was the best! The kids did awesome and even started a protest  march around the room for their favorites 🙂 We tallied the votes at the end and popcorn was our overall class favorite! 🙂

MathThe children told addition and subtraction stories.  They are working hard at learning this math skill.  The children also ordered numbers 1-10 to complete dot-to-dot pictures.  We love doing mystery dot-to-dot pictures!  Practicing writing numbers 1-7 was another skill the children completed this week.  Thank you for encouraging and supporting your child in completing their weekly math homework.  It shows at school!

Reading Workshop: We focused on reading one page at  time during workshop this week. We also worked with reading and creating 3 Halloween themed books this week! We brought two of them home! 5 Little Pumpkins (this is one we have memorized, because we have practiced the song) and Jack-o-Lantern, please read them with us! Our book (shoe) boxes that we decorated will be coming home with you at conferences! These will be for storing all our popcorn books that now will slowly be making their apperance home!

Split Lit:  We have now officially begun our Split Lit time.  This is a time where the children are split into small literacy groups that are customized to each of the child’s learning needs.  Each group is led by an adult para pro or myself.  We are so pleased that Mrs. McIntyre and Mrs. Van join us each day.  This week the children had fun creating their Spooky House & then singing the song while practicing letters/sounds, rhyming, phonemic skills and popcorn (sight) words.  Continue the reinforcement at home with singing the song with your child.

Mystery ReaderMrs. Banach, Hayley’s Mom surprised us with one of our classroom favorites, Pete the Cat and his 4 Groovy Buttons! We definitely sang along! Thanks again Mrs. Banach for coming!

Popcorn Words for this week were:

 “stop”, “go”, “yes”, “no”, “brown”
