  • Popcorn Words:  Our popcorn words this week were: to, you and do .
  • Readers Workshop:  During readers workshop this week we learned how to have powerful partnerships with our friends.  We read back to back privately and  knee to knee and elbow to elbow when it was time to share our books! I love the excitement the students have about reading!
  • Writers Workshop:  This week we continued to tell small moment, one time, one place stories of things that have happened to us. We have worked on illustrating our stories using lots of details, labels and even exploring the writing of a sentence. I am so proud of my writers!
  • Split Lit:  The students were assessed this week on their knowledge of letters and sounds.  I am amazed and so proud of them for the progress that they have made.  Wow!  I can tell that they are working hard and are ready to learn during Split Lit.  Hooray for them!  On Monday, we will be dividing into 3 groups to work on literacy skills that are  pertinant to them.  Mrs. Lisa, Mrs. O (para professionals) and myself will be leading these groups.
  • Math:  We have continued to work on making numbers, adding numbers together and even started talking about subtracting.  We found groups of numbers too!  We even got to look at pictures and make up stories using words like first, then and at the end .  For example, first I was playing with two trucks, then I grabbed one more to play with. At the end I was playing with three trucks all together.
  • Handwriting:  During handwriting we practiced writing the numbers 8, 9, and 10! We came home with our number books. Please continue to work on writing these numbers at home following our poems!

News from the Jungle: May 6-10

Special Events: Field Trip to the Outdoor Discovery Center and Huizenga Park

We had a wonderful time on our field trip.  The students learned a lot about different plants and animals at the Outdoor Discovery Center and enjoyed a picnic lunch and play time at Huizenga Park!  A HUGE “Thank You” to all of our parentchaperones.  We couldn’t have done this without your help.

MYSTERY READER: We had another visit this week from a sibling! This time Jada, Faith’s sister from Mrs. Walenta’s 5th grade class surprised us with 2 of her favorite kindergarten books. My Daddy Snores (which many of us made connections to) and If you Take a Mouse to School. Jada was an awesome reader to listen to! Thanks for surprising us!

MATH:  The students completed their final math test this week. They did fantastic!  I will be sending these home with your child next week.  We will continue to review and practice all of the math skills learned this year during the next few weeks.

DAILY 3:  We continue to alternate our days when some of us work in guided reading groups and the rest of us have a Daily 3 choice. During this choice time, students are either choosing to read to self, listen to reading, or word work. The students are doing wonderful! I am so proud of all my READERS! We all have come so far and continue to keep growing!

WRITING WORKSHOP:  The students are learning about opinions.  We talked about how opinions create strong feelings – good or bad – and its okay to think differently than your friends. The most important part of having an opinion is being able to explain why you feel the way you do. We worked on giving our opinions about different books we read this week and provided reasons from the story to support our opinions!  The students also learned the proper format of a letter and had a chance to write me a letter sharing their opinion about the book, I Wanna Iguana or the book I Wanna New Room. We will continue writing opinion letters in the upcoming weeks.

SCIENCE:  We learned more about plants and animals this week.  It was neat to see the students share what they’ve learned in the classroom with our tour guide at the Outdoor Discovery Center!  It was definitely a proud teacher moment for me!

We also welcomed some of our bean plants home this week. Hopefully, you found a nice pot to help them grow bigger in! I will start sending more home this week, we are hoping that all of us see sprouts soon!

We also did a fun experiment this week to learn more about the important job the stem has for the plant. We made predictions and then put white carnations in different colored dyed water to see what would happen! The results were so fun to enjoy day after day!

Jungle News: Week of April 8-12th

Special Happenings this week

Rain, rain, go away! Welcome back to the school routine! The kiddos did a great job of adjusting back to school this week. I was impressed with their behaviors, despite the horrible rainy weather. We had a Beach Day Behavior Celebration on Wednesday in an attempt to bring the warm weather here! Not much luck, but we sure had a fun day! We all looked like we were headed to the beach! We had fun reading with partners in Mrs. Iwema’s class on our beach towels! What a fun day!

Mrs. Poisson, Kendra’s mom visited on Friday afternoon to talk to us about Michigan’s state rock, the petosky stone! She read us the Sleeping Bear Dunes Legend and brought in some special rocks for us to feel! Thanks so much for being our special guest!

Mrs. Fumarolo, Ashley’s mom made her second appearance as our mystery reader! She brought another one of Ashley’s favorites, a Barbie book! We LOVE our mystery readers, thank you!  I have a few lined up for the rest of April, but I will be looking for more interested readers come May!

Writing Workshop: We started a new writing unit this week, Authors as Mentors, where we have begun to learn that authors use mentor texts to help them become better writers. We went back to remembering what we have learned about writing small moment stories and had the chance to start writing our own! We thought about how the author got the idea to write that story as we read through a few small moment mentor texts! Many of us chose stories from spring break, as we sure had lots to tell! We are focusing more on our words this time as we stretch a small moment story over several pages with lots of details!

Math: We continued to practice solving addition and subtraction problems in a snap, reviewing number partners to 10, writing numbers 1-100, and drawing a group of teen number objects and locating the 10-group.

SOCIAL STUDIES:  We began our unit on maps and where we are in the world.  We are reading Me on the Map to help us learn these concepts.  We are busy creating our very own map booklets as we add to our concentric ring to show that we work in our classroom, which is inside of Georgetown school, which is located in Hudsonville, which is in the state of Michigan Thank you for assisting your child in drawing a map of their bedroom. They had fun sharing these with a partner on Friday!

Popcorn Words for this week were:

“as” and “has”

SMILES!!! :)…

We had a good week, we had a great week, so pat yourselves on the back…

Theme of the Week: Brown Bear– This book has a great rhythm and beat, the illustrations are fun and predictable, our color popcorn sight words are throughout the text, as well as many other popcorn words learned thus far, such as “I,” “a,” “see.” and “dog.”  On Friday we created our own special book that will join our classroom library and our own book retell bracelet. They were super excited to read their bracelets to you!We also had our first BIG GROUP on Friday with Mrs. Iwema’s class, we taught her class the “Cool Bear Hunt” song and dance and shared some gummy bear treats together. I was the mystery reader for their room, we had a super fun afternoon meeting one another! Hoping for more BIG GROUP times to come!

Popcorn Words this week: “green”, “the” and “dog”

Next weeks words: “blue”, “is”, “this” , and “his”

Special Event: Walk-a-Thon- Thanks for all your wonderful donations to our school! This event was a HUGE success, and what a beautiful morning to walk! We even got to practice our soccer kicks, shoot some hoops and jump through hoops as we made our way around the track! We had so much fun!

Math: The children have been learning and reinforcing their knowledge of groups and sets of numbers, graphing (more, fewer, longer, shorter), as well as differentiating shapes that are circles and not circles (squares, rectangles, etc.).  Homework was sent home this week with your child.  They were VERY excited to bring this home and get started.  Thank you for your help with administering this homework and encouraging them on this new task and experience.  The children are looking forward to receiving their homework once a week on Thursdays.

Our number writing practice and poems for this week were:  6= “A stick and a hoop do the tricks, that’s the way to make a six.”  7=”Across the sky and down from heaven, that’s the way to make a seven.”

In our Writing Workshop this week, we read the book “What a Treasure!” by Jane and Will Hillenbrand, and discussed how a treasure is more than just money or a treasure chest of gold.  A treasure is different to everyone, and usually it touches our hearts, like our families and friends.  Thank you for assisting your child this week in selecting a treasure for their treasure bags to share with our class.  I loved hearing and learning about all the many things that are so dear and important to our class. These items helped to be a springboard for our writing this week on our special writer’s workshop paper.  We learned about the parts of the paper and what and where to include each.  The children did a FANTASTIC job for their first time!  We will continue to practice this skill of writing and most of all brainstorming our ideas for topics to write about.

Our first class visit to our school library occurred this past Tuesday.  We had the opportunity to meet Mrs. VandenBerg, our librarian, have her read a story, and check out our first book! The children did a great job with their first library check out and are very proud for the opportunity to independently check out a book each Tuesday. Thank you for reading with your child and enjoy this special time together.

The Explorers for next week will be: Madeline, Dylan, Kendra, Faith, and Nathan!

A Great Week in the Jungle…

On Monday the children learned what Constitution Day by connecting it our classroom created promises/rules and had a discussion about how the United States have a set of rules too. We recited the Pledge of Allegiance and our class pledge, leaned about some famous American landmarks and people (George Washington, Ben Franklin, the White House, the American Flag, etc) and created American Flag hats! It was dun to celebrate our country!

During Math time we have been reading Anno’s Counting Book which helped us learn number relationships by counting groups of objects.  The children have applied this concept by drawing their own scenes to show groups of 2-5.  I hope that you have asked your child to explain their scene drawings to you as they arrive home.  We also used our math trays, mini square tiles and number tiles to build concepts of numbers 1-5 and to begin to add and subtract totals of 2 and 3. The children are reciting number poems to help them learn the proper formation of writing their numbers.  We are having fun saying these poems while we use mini chalkboards, mini whiteboards and create rainbow writings of our numbers.  So far we have learned poems for the numbers 0-5.  This week we will learn the poems for numbers 6 & 7.  Please ask your child to recite these number poems for you as they practice writing their numbers at home.

We have begun our Writer’s Workshop by having the children tell stories about themselves and things that they know and can do.  The children are learning to use their storytelling voice (loud enough for the listener to hear) and to look at their audience. They are also learning to listen when others are telling stories.  At home, you can support your child’s oral storytelling by telling stories yourself about things you know and can do (everyday events your child can relate to) and by asking your child to tell you the story they told at school.  Help your child remember stories by practicing telling stories at home and encourage them to tell these stories at school.  Have fun telling stories!

In our Reading Workshop time we explored concept books, books with things we know and can read, abc’s, numbers, shapes, colors, store and restaurant signs, food labels, etc. We also worked on looking at a books cover to learn what a book might be about. We continued to read and love our books!

We also had fun this week learning the Gummy Bear song, Who Stole the Cookies? and continued enjoyment singing the Cool Bear Hunt!
