It was another great week in the jungle- Sept. 23-27

I apologize for this post coming so late, I’ve been fighting a rough cold! Please try your best to keep everyone healthy! Sick season is already upon us 🙁

Here is a look at what your Kindergartener has been learning:

  • Color Word:  Green
  • Popcorn Words:  Our popcorn words last week were: the and dog.
  • Readers Workshop:  During readers workshop this week we learned how to choose books that are a good fit for us.  One way to find a good fit book is by looking at the cover of a book.  We can also find a good fit book by looking inside a book.  We took some time to read books in three ways too!!!  Your kindergartener practiced reading a book by reading the pictures, reading by telling a story they already knew, and by working to read the words.  Each student has a book box that they are storing their “good fit” books in.  Among those books are two books that have popcorn words in them.  We have been practicing reading these books by reading the words!!  They are doing an amazing job!!
  • Writers Workshop:  This week we continued to work on sharing stories that we know and retelling stories that we listened to.  We shared stories with a partner and even told our story about our Walk-a-thon!  We did great!
  • Math:  In Math we continued working on comparing numbers.  We made “towers” with numbers to see which number was taller/bigger and which one was shorter/smaller.  We have even started writing number sentences.  For example, 4=3+1 or 3+1=4.  Thanks for working with your child on their first math homework of the year! Every Wednesday a new math homework will come home. The children have one week to complete it, but can return it back to school as soon as it’s completed.
  • Handwriting:  During handwriting we practiced writing the numbers 6 and 7.  We even learned a fun way to tell between the letters b and d.  When we talked about writing a b we learned that the line of the b is like a bat and the round part is like the ball.  So when we write a b we can remind ourselves that the bat hits the ball.  For the letter d we learned that the round part is like a doughnut and the line part is when the doughnut rolls out the door.  Pretty neat trick to help us remember those tricky b and d’s!!
  • Walk-a-thon…WOW!!!  We had a beautiful day to walk together!  Our friends were so excited to see one another and share in this fun filled day.  We even spotted some big brothers, sisters and parents!!  Great to see the kids enjoying themselves!!  This even made for a great even to share during writers workshop to tell a story together!

  • Don’t forget...to turn in your permission slips for our upcoming orchard field trip.  Chaperones are free of charge, but must provide their own transportation to the orchard. Carpools are encouraged. Directions to the orchard will be given to you that morning. Can’t wait!
  • Wednesday is library day! We went for the first time Wednesday. Please help your child remember to return their book by Wednesday so they can check out a new one!
  • School Policy:  No Heelys (wheeled shoes) or Beyblades are to be brought to school.  This is a school policy for student safety.  Thank you.
  • Upcoming Events:  Wednesday, Oct. 2…Fire Safety day , Friday, Oct. 4…Popcorn Friday (provided by our PTC).

Hope everyone has a great week and stays healthy!
