Countdown to Party Time!!!

Thursday, October 31…tomorrow!!!

Kindergarteners may come to school dressed in their costumes for the day.

Our Fall parade will start at 9:45…we will travel down our Kindergarten hallway, then down to our 5th grade buddies classrooms and do a lap in front of the office (our loving Mrs. Nurenburg and Mrs. Ripley LOVE to see us in our costumes!), then back to our classrooms.

Planners and helpers please arrive at 9:45 to help with set-up while the parade takes place. The party will start approximately 10:00 a.m. and end approximately 11:00 a.m.

Parents are welcome! Just please no siblings, it’s tight enough with all our loving parents! We can’t wait to enjoy the festivities together!!

If you are donating any supplies for the party please make sure to bring them if necessary.

Your Kindergartener may stay in their costume for the day, I will be : )  If your Kindergartener would like to change out of their costume after the party they may do so.  I ask that they make sure they can participate in gym with their costume- bring gym socks! 🙂

Let me know if you have any questions!!

Can’t wait!!!

Jungle News Week of Oct. 29-Nov.1

Special Happenings this week:

Halloween Party- What a fun way to end the month of October! We had some great costumes and some awesome planners and helpers! Thanks again!

Rang Guang Visit- Wow! We were so excited to meet the students visiting from our sister school in Taiwan this week! The school wide assembly was so fun and we got to see a special puppet and yo yo show from these students!

New Brain Break- Tooty Ta dance 🙂 Ask us for a demonstration, we sure had a lot of laughs!

Handwriting: We continued with two more Starting Capital letters, V and W this week! Keep practicing and reviewing these letters at home!

Writing Workshop: We connected learning of our upcoming presidential election into our writing workshop time. It was a HUGE hit! We read My Teacher for President and Duck for President. After we read Duck for President we filled out our voter registration cards and we voted which way we like to eat corn….corn on the cob, popcorn or caramel corn? We took turns going to the private voting booth and selecting our choice in secrecy. Then we created voting signs to convince our friends  why that way to eat corn was the best! The kids did awesome and even started a protest  march around the room for their favorites 🙂 We tallied the votes at the end and popcorn was our overall class favorite! 🙂

MathThe children told addition and subtraction stories.  They are working hard at learning this math skill.  The children also ordered numbers 1-10 to complete dot-to-dot pictures.  We love doing mystery dot-to-dot pictures!  Practicing writing numbers 1-7 was another skill the children completed this week.  Thank you for encouraging and supporting your child in completing their weekly math homework.  It shows at school!

Reading Workshop: We focused on reading one page at  time during workshop this week. We also worked with reading and creating 3 Halloween themed books this week! We brought two of them home! 5 Little Pumpkins (this is one we have memorized, because we have practiced the song) and Jack-o-Lantern, please read them with us! Our book (shoe) boxes that we decorated will be coming home with you at conferences! These will be for storing all our popcorn books that now will slowly be making their apperance home!

Split Lit:  We have now officially begun our Split Lit time.  This is a time where the children are split into small literacy groups that are customized to each of the child’s learning needs.  Each group is led by an adult para pro or myself.  We are so pleased that Mrs. McIntyre and Mrs. Van join us each day.  This week the children had fun creating their Spooky House & then singing the song while practicing letters/sounds, rhyming, phonemic skills and popcorn (sight) words.  Continue the reinforcement at home with singing the song with your child.

 Mystery ReaderMrs. Banach, Hayley’s Mom surprised us with one of our classroom favorites, Pete the Cat and his 4 Groovy Buttons! We definitely sang along! Thanks again Mrs. Banach for coming!

Popcorn Words for this week were:

 “stop”, “go”, “yes”, “no”, “brown”

School Wide Important Events:

From November 5-16, we will be engaged in a school wide service project called TWO ACTS OF MINDFUL GIVING:  LOCAL AND GLOBAL.

I will provide an update on our class giving on Friday Nov 8 and Friday Nov 16.

  • Our class goal is to raise $60 and bring in 60 non-perishable items.
  • We would like every child to donate 2 non-perishable food items and 2 dollars toward this service project.
  • The canned goods will supply local families with much needed food.  The money will purchase a rechargeable solar light for schools in Uganda.

To find out more about this special project, please visit our GEORGETOWN BLOG. And…thank you for giving!

Important Information and Reminders:

* Conferences begin Monday! Please arrive promptly at your time, outside my door. Conferences last 15 min. long and are back to back, so please be mindly of time for all my families. I am looking forward to discussing your child’s progress so far in Kindergarten! You have lots to be proud of each of them for! 🙂 The PTConferencesSchedule is posted here, please double check your date and time.

*Book Fair- We will be previewing Monday and purchasing Wednesday afternoon, therefore we won’t have library this week! Please keep your library books an extra week!  Scholastic Books will be bringing in books that you can purchase at a reasonable cost.  A flyer went home describing some books that will be available for purchase.  There will be many more books as well.  These are the same books that you find online or in the book orders that are sent home each month.  If you wish to purchase books, please send the money inside an envelope labeled with your child’s NAME and BOOK FAIR MONEY on the front.  Parent volunteers will be at the Book Fair to assist your child in their purchases.  You are welcome to come to school and shop with your child too.  Participating in buying books at the Book Fair is OPTIONAL.  The book fair will be open during Parent Teacher conferences too.

~~~~Thinking ahead…..We will be having a “Book Gift Exchange” during our Christmas party in December.  The children will be exchanging books among themselves so please choose a book that BOTH boys and girls would enjoy reading. Please keep the cost of the books under $4.00.  I will be sending home a book order form next week as well and those books will arrive in time for our exchange too. ~~~~~~~
*The   November calendar    has been posted at the top of our blog under CALENDARS.  This calendar lists our weekly popcorn words, birthdays, specials, and fun events.
Jungle News- Oct.21-25
5 SENSES: We continued to learn about and use our 5 senses this week. We had the opportunity to use our ears to hear various sounds and identify them and we used our hands to touch many different objects which we then needed to identify. The children put all of their 5 senses to the test on our field trip to the Career Tech Center on Wednesday. We had so much fun and learned so much. Thank you so much to ALL of our MANY wonderful parent chaperones, who attended this trip with us. We appreciated all of your help and couldn’t have done it without you! Thank you so much!!:) I hope that you enjoy this short slide show.
MATH:  We began to tell simple addition and subtraction stories using family scenarios.  For example: “1 piece of toast popped up from the toaster.  I put in 2 more slices and they popped up.  How many pieces of toast are there?”  The children were introduced to the 5-penny strip.  We learned how we can relate this 5-penny strip to our 5 fingers on one hand and to the 5-group on the number parade.  The children also reviewed and practiced writing the number 6.
WRITER’S WORKSHOP:  The students continue to develop their skill of adding details,labels and words to their stories.  The children are doing a wonderful job of  stretching their words out like “bubble gum”, saying words slowly as they try to listen for letter sounds when adding their labels.  I am impressed with their attention to detail as they draw their pictures and the many labels in their drawings!  Wow!
HANDWRITING:  We began learning to write STARTING CORNER letters H,K,L,U this week.  STARTING CORNER letters all start in the corner.  The children are doing an impressive job of learning to begin their letters “at the top” and write them neatly.  I am so proud of their hard work!  :)
SCIENCE: We predicted and tested which Fall seasonal items would float or sink through experiments this week.  We even charted out findings  Everyone enjoyed this activity very much!
READING WORKSHOP:  Learned about the importance of reading from left to right.  We quickly learned  how silly it sounded (and how the information did not make sense) if we did not read the words in the proper order and direction.  Practicing the art of reading left to right by following along with our pointing finger has been so helpful.  Please encourage and practice this strategy with your child.
*We had 2 mystery readers this week! Mrs. Szlachcic, Maggie’s mom surprised us on Thursday with two of Maggies favorites! Our favorite was Five Monkey’s Jumping on the Bed, we even joined in and read along! Then Mrs. Ball, Isaiah’s mom surprised us on Friday the book, Officer Buckle and Gloria, a funny book about a dog with special safety tips! More mystery readers to come! I will be contacting more parents soon!
5TH GRADE BUDDIES: Our 5th grade Bus Buddies from Mr. Gort’s Classroom teamed up with us for our first reading buddy Friday! Most of us are paired up with our regular bus buddy from the week, but some of us had the opportunity to meet our 5th grade buddy for the first time! We will try to shoot for a visit with our buddies every other Friday. This week the 5th graders came to our room with a book to read us and then we got to read one of our book box books to them! 🙂 We had a blast and look forward to more fun times to come!
Marco’s Pizza Thursday! We enjoyed a relaxing lunch in our classroom on Thursday for our Marco pizza party! Yummy! Thanks to Mrs. William’s for the healthy carrots and HUGE grapes and Mrs. Banach for the juice boxes, they were the perfect compliment to our pizza!
