Please add the October flash cards sent home today to the prior ones. Thank you so much for practicing with your child.  It is making a difference!  This was the last color book.  Enjoy reading all the books and singing the color songs at home!

We have all come so far in our writing! I can’t wait to begin our new unit of labeling and list books as we investigate the world around us as scientific writers next week!

Math: Our math activities helped us know that we can compare numbers using the tiles = (equal) and =/…a diagonal line through (not equal), order numbers to complete dot to dot pictures and make groups of 6-10 using 5 strips and extra ones.

Jungle News Week of Oct. 29-Nov.1

Special Happenings this week:

Halloween Party- What a fun way to end the month of October! We had some great costumes and some awesome planners and helpers! Thanks again!

Rang Guang Visit- Wow! We were so excited to meet the students visiting from our sister school in Taiwan this week! The school wide assembly was so fun and we got to see a special puppet and yo yo show from these students!

New Brain Break- Tooty Ta dance 🙂 Ask us for a demonstration, we sure had a lot of laughs!

Handwriting: We continued with two more Starting Capital letters, V and W this week! Keep practicing and reviewing these letters at home!

Writing Workshop: We connected learning of our upcoming presidential election into our writing workshop time. It was a HUGE hit! We read My Teacher for President and Duck for President. After we read Duck for President we filled out our voter registration cards and we voted which way we like to eat corn….corn on the cob, popcorn or caramel corn? We took turns going to the private voting booth and selecting our choice in secrecy. Then we created voting signs to convince our friends  why that way to eat corn was the best! The kids did awesome and even started a protest  march around the room for their favorites 🙂 We tallied the votes at the end and popcorn was our overall class favorite! 🙂

MathThe children told addition and subtraction stories.  They are working hard at learning this math skill.  The children also ordered numbers 1-10 to complete dot-to-dot pictures.  We love doing mystery dot-to-dot pictures!  Practicing writing numbers 1-7 was another skill the children completed this week.  Thank you for encouraging and supporting your child in completing their weekly math homework.  It shows at school!

Reading Workshop: We focused on reading one page at  time during workshop this week. We also worked with reading and creating 3 Halloween themed books this week! We brought two of them home! 5 Little Pumpkins (this is one we have memorized, because we have practiced the song) and Jack-o-Lantern, please read them with us! Our book (shoe) boxes that we decorated will be coming home with you at conferences! These will be for storing all our popcorn books that now will slowly be making their apperance home!

Split Lit:  We have now officially begun our Split Lit time.  This is a time where the children are split into small literacy groups that are customized to each of the child’s learning needs.  Each group is led by an adult para pro or myself.  We are so pleased that Mrs. McIntyre and Mrs. Van join us each day.  This week the children had fun creating their Spooky House & then singing the song while practicing letters/sounds, rhyming, phonemic skills and popcorn (sight) words.  Continue the reinforcement at home with singing the song with your child.

Mystery ReaderMrs. Banach, Hayley’s Mom surprised us with one of our classroom favorites, Pete the Cat and his 4 Groovy Buttons! We definitely sang along! Thanks again Mrs. Banach for coming!

Popcorn Words for this week were:

 “stop”, “go”, “yes”, “no”, “brown”

School Wide Important Events:

From November 5-16, we will be engaged in a school wide service project called TWO ACTS OF MINDFUL GIVING:  LOCAL AND GLOBAL.

I will provide an update on our class giving on Friday Nov 8 and Friday Nov 16.

  • Our class goal is to raise $60 and bring in 60 non-perishable items.
  • We would like every child to donate 2 non-perishable food items and 2 dollars toward this service project.
  • The canned goods will supply local families with much needed food.  The money will purchase a rechargeable solar light for schools in Uganda.

To find out more about this special project, please visit our GEORGETOWN BLOG. And…thank you for giving!

Important Information and Reminders:

* Conferences begin Monday! Please arrive promptly at your time, outside my door. Conferences last 15 min. long and are back to back, so please be mindly of time for all my families. I am looking forward to discussing your child’s progress so far in Kindergarten! You have lots to be proud of each of them for! 🙂 The PTConferencesSchedule is posted here, please double check your date and time.

*Book Fair- We will be previewing Monday and purchasing Wednesday afternoon, therefore we won’t have library this week! Please keep your library books an extra week!  Scholastic Books will be bringing in books that you can purchase at a reasonable cost.  A flyer went home describing some books that will be available for purchase.  There will be many more books as well.  These are the same books that you find online or in the book orders that are sent home each month.  If you wish to purchase books, please send the money inside an envelope labeled with your child’s NAME and BOOK FAIR MONEY on the front.  Parent volunteers will be at the Book Fair to assist your child in their purchases.  You are welcome to come to school and shop with your child too.  Participating in buying books at the Book Fair is OPTIONAL.  The book fair will be open during Parent Teacher conferences too.

~~~~Thinking ahead…..We will be having a “Book Gift Exchange” during our Christmas party in December.  The children will be exchanging books among themselves so please choose a book that BOTH boys and girls would enjoy reading. Please keep the cost of the books under $4.00.  I will be sending home a book order form next week as well and those books will arrive in time for our exchange too. ~~~~~~~
