Jungle News: Week of April 8-12th

Special Happenings this week

Rain, rain, go away! Welcome back to the school routine! The kiddos did a great job of adjusting back to school this week. I was impressed with their behaviors, despite the horrible rainy weather. We had a Beach Day Behavior Celebration on Wednesday in an attempt to bring the warm weather here! Not much luck, but we sure had a fun day! We all looked like we were headed to the beach! We had fun reading with partners in Mrs. Iwema’s class on our beach towels! What a fun day!

Mrs. Poisson, Kendra’s mom visited on Friday afternoon to talk to us about Michigan’s state rock, the petosky stone! She read us the Sleeping Bear Dunes Legend and brought in some special rocks for us to feel! Thanks so much for being our special guest!

Mrs. Fumarolo, Ashley’s mom made her second appearance as our mystery reader! She brought another one of Ashley’s favorites, a Barbie book! We LOVE our mystery readers, thank you!  I have a few lined up for the rest of April, but I will be looking for more interested readers come May!

Writing Workshop: We started a new writing unit this week, Authors as Mentors, where we have begun to learn that authors use mentor texts to help them become better writers. We went back to remembering what we have learned about writing small moment stories and had the chance to start writing our own! We thought about how the author got the idea to write that story as we read through a few small moment mentor texts! Many of us chose stories from spring break, as we sure had lots to tell! We are focusing more on our words this time as we stretch a small moment story over several pages with lots of details!

Math: We continued to practice solving addition and subtraction problems in a snap, reviewing number partners to 10, writing numbers 1-100, and drawing a group of teen number objects and locating the 10-group.

SOCIAL STUDIES:  We began our unit on maps and where we are in the world.  We are reading Me on the Map to help us learn these concepts.  We are busy creating our very own map booklets as we add to our concentric ring to show that we work in our classroom, which is inside of Georgetown school, which is located in Hudsonville, which is in the state of Michigan Thank you for assisting your child in drawing a map of their bedroom. They had fun sharing these with a partner on Friday!
