Weekly Jungle Update, Jan. 16-20…

January 16 – 20…

Beach Day!!! We ended our week with a super fun beach day!!! Our whole classroom was healthy and back at school to all celebrate our good behavior choices together!! We had so much fun!! We wrote a class book about what we like to do at the beach, pretended to go surfing, read on our beach towels, took a surfing photo shoot, did the limbo, math beach games and more! Whew!!! It was a fun day!!!

Popcorn Words:  This week the words he and she popped into our room! We used our chunky monkey reading strategy and noticed that the chunk he is in the word she.  The Kindergarteners worked hard on our split lit. center time practicing these words and even made their own sight word watch.  Keep practicing these words along with the prior months words. Please also refer to the list of the 60 words they should know by the end of K, if you need another list please e-mail me!

Writer’s Workshop:   The Kindergarteners have continued to practice writing small moment stories.  We’re doing a great job checking for periods, capital letters to start and capital I and lowercase throughout, we also learned how to add a carrot with a missing word when we try re-reading to make sure it makes sense. We will be doing an “on demand” writing piece soon where the Kindergarteners have to show me what they can do without any help.  I know they will do great!  I have seen so much growth from the first small moment writing that we did back in September!!  You have an amazing Kindergartener!!!

Reader’s Workshop:  Vroom, Vroom……that is the sound of us getting ready to rev up our minds to read!  This week we practiced by backing up to reread.  We back up to read the words, read to understand, sound like a good reader and to have fun!

Math: We practiced sorting, finding teen numbers, building number sentences and acting our math stories this week.  Friday during our Math games we did so beachy themed games! Adding the sum of 2 dice together to see if we could make partners of 8 for 8 octopus legs!! And racing the sand timers to put our numbers in order 1-20!!

Split Lit.:  We’re doing awesome with our rainbow sight words!! Many of us moved up to a new list on Wednesday!!  I was able to reassess our literacy skills one-on-one this week! This week I sent home a mini reading skill progress report just to give you a sense of where your child is at and what skills you can give them extra practice with at home. I am so proud of my growing readers!! Also remember to log in to Raz-kids.com at home as a wonderful online reading tool!!! The kinders have loved logging on each day this week at school and are very familiar with navigating the site now!

Science: We have started exploring Forces of Motion.   All week we have read some great books that talked about different forces, like push and pull. We explored our classroom for objects that we could push and pull.  Finding out that we could move things further depending on how hard we pushed them.  We will continue our study on Forces of Motion through next week.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day: We started our week off with a celebration of the fairness and equality that Martin Luther King, Jr. fought for. We talked about fairness, sharing and not judging others by the outside.  They were all quick to understand that it’s not fair to say someone can’t play or have the same things as everyone else. We cracked a brown and white egg to discover they may look different from the outside, but their insides are the same! It was a great discussion about being fair, not judging people by what’s on the outside and celebrating that we are all different.

Computers:  On Friday we had a chance to use the COW again  (Computer On Wheels) with our 5th grade buddies! Mr. Gort’s class came to our room to explore abcya.com. A great free site with educational games!

Mystery Reader: On Friday, Mr. Weber, Nolan’s dad surprised us all! He read the book, If I had Duck Feet!!!  It was a fun, silly book that had us all laughing along!! Thanks so much for coming!! Please sign up online if you would like to visit us!

Explorer of the Jungle: We continued our 4th time as Explorer of the Jungle this week by having fun hearing lots of favorite books!! Wow! I have discovered some new ones I will need to buy for our classroom! Keep a lookout when your child is chosen! Info. will come home that night when your child is picked and they will bring their book the next school day.

Valentine’s Day:  Our Valentine’s Day celebration will be Monday, February 13, 1:50-3:00 pm. Mrs. Bottrell and Mrs. Banach, Lila and Mady’s mom have willingly teamed up to plan a fun party! I will be posting a sign up for supplies and station volunteers later today!

If your child would like to give Valentine’s to their classmates a name list came home Monday. Valentines are due to school by Wednesday, February 1 or as soon as you get them finished, to ensure enough time for the Kindergarteners to deliver into special “mailboxes” we will make at school.

100 Days of School Celebration:  Wednesday, February 8!!!  Information about Day 100 collections came home Monday too and the collections will be due on Feb.8.  Start thinking about what 100 items your kinder will like to collect and bring to school. These can be displayed on a t-shirt, poster, box, etc.! Get creative and have fun with this project!!

Take Home Book Program:  Thank you so much for a GREAT start to our Take Home Book Program!!  The Kindergarteners are so proud to bring their books in and seem to be doing very well.   If you see that they are bringing home 2 books it is because I want them to see the next level and practice more words reading.  These take home books are meant to be EASY for them to read with you.  Our work that we do at school during our split lit. time is at their instructional level for reading.  Thank you again for your support of this book program!
